[Early in the morning on July 5th, after Jane Smith's uncharacteristic behavior was put to an end, were someone to go on a walk throughout the park, they might come across an unusual sight.

Jane Smith is sitting on a park bench hidden somewhere between the trees. Or at least, at a glance it appears to be her, but at second glance, she doesn't look exactly the same. Her features are younger, more a 24 year old girl than a 30 year old mother, and there's something less perfect and put together in her looks.

Maybe this time, it's Samantha Achewood, the girl Jane Smith used to be, sitting by herself. She appears perfectly contented and peaceful with her eyes closed, perhaps napping. But on closer inspection, she isn't breathing and she has no pulse, and her body is cold and lifeless to the touch.

There's no cause of death to find here. Samantha simply went to sleep and will never wake up.

But that isn't the only surprising thing one might notice about Mayfield today. No matter where you look or what you might do, Officer Grady is nowhere to be found.]

I-I'll figure something out. Enough sitting around.

We have to do more than just move around. I've been searching everywhere, and I still haven't been able to find anything. [She sighs.] Sometimes it seems like nobody wants to do anything except "get back" at Mayfield. I understand the feeling...until today, that was what I wanted too. Or that was part of it. But...

[She looks at Jane's body.]

They're just like us, aren't they? Some of them. The drones.

Anyone of us could be droned for good at any moment. We're all like them, and they're all like us.

A long time ago I figured that there's a good chance I'd never get home again. I figure, a-at this point, I'd be happy with going anywhere that wasn't here. O-Or even the possibility of taking Mayfield for ourselves. No more torture, no more death, no more droning.

{Crowe's voice is startlingly grave.]

Taking it for ourselves? Do you really think that's possible?

[Nina frowns. Even if it was, the truth is that she really can't stay. She has friends and responsibilities back home that are depending on her.]

Why don't you think you'll go back home?

[identity profile] 2011-07-12 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Nina, I've been here for a year and a half straight. What would you think?

[You'll have to forgive him for being a complete pessimist.]

I don't know, but it's another option. Something to strive for.
