[Early in the morning on July 5th, after Jane Smith's uncharacteristic behavior was put to an end, were someone to go on a walk throughout the park, they might come across an unusual sight.

Jane Smith is sitting on a park bench hidden somewhere between the trees. Or at least, at a glance it appears to be her, but at second glance, she doesn't look exactly the same. Her features are younger, more a 24 year old girl than a 30 year old mother, and there's something less perfect and put together in her looks.

Maybe this time, it's Samantha Achewood, the girl Jane Smith used to be, sitting by herself. She appears perfectly contented and peaceful with her eyes closed, perhaps napping. But on closer inspection, she isn't breathing and she has no pulse, and her body is cold and lifeless to the touch.

There's no cause of death to find here. Samantha simply went to sleep and will never wake up.

But that isn't the only surprising thing one might notice about Mayfield today. No matter where you look or what you might do, Officer Grady is nowhere to be found.]

[Late at night on Fourth of July, after the last fireworks have stopped and after all the droning has worn off, Jane Smith can be seen walking down the streets of the town. Or rather, stumbling, but she doesn't appear to have been drinking. She seems happy as she always does, but the smile today is wider and even less natural looking than normal. She also looks a little disheveled, and her eye makeup is badly smudged by what appear to be tear stains. She'll go about waving to neighbors with her shaking hands and talking to herself as she does.]

Hahahaha...hahaha...

What a fun party, everyone! What a wonderful evening in this wonderful town! Richard, did you like the fireworks? ohgod ohgod Richard No no no, it's fine, nothing to worry about! Happy Fourth of July, everybody!

Oh, Lucy, darling, you'll be so angry that I'm away, won't you? And when Lucy darling gets angry, I have to go again, but I don't want to go, please don't, Doctor, please! I'm having such a nice evening like this ohgod ohgod Richard what did they-- I don't want to go back, I just...

Please, please, please, please please, I can't do this anymore, don't do this to me anymore Richard, I want to go see Richard please please just...

[And after she finishes speaking, Samantha breaks into hysterical sobs mixed with cheerful, false laughter.]

welcome to port west

[Boy, that sure was a rough week, wasn't it? You know what a hard-working citizen of Mayfield like yourself deserves after such a stressful time? A nice, relaxing vacation at a tropical beach, of course!

Anyone who qualified and redeemed their island vacation prize will wake up Saturday morning in a beach chair on a deserted island, overlooking a gorgeous view of the ocean. Hanging from a small shack nearby is a banner reading "Welcome to Port West!"; inside, you'll find a cheerful drone waiting with a bathing suit just your size. The sun is shining brightly, the water's temperature is perfect, and there's plenty of drones around ready to take your every drink order - tropical fruit drinks for the adults and soda pop for the kiddies! There's no way to contact Mayfield here - this is supposed to be a getaway, after all - but there are plenty of ways to entertain yourself at our beautiful Port West! Feel free to take a stroll around the island; you'll wind up back at your starting point in about an hour. If you're one of the talented few who managed to kill five or more people, there's a private cabana waiting just for you where drones will offer you massages, free food and drinks, and various spa services; anyone not on the VIP list will get turned away at the door, though. Or lounge under the shade of the lone palm tree; you may have to fight for space though, as all of your fellow killers are here as well, and like yourself, they've all kept any regains they acquired during the event. But we're sure everyone will be able to get along just splendidly!

Just be sure not to swim out too far. We wouldn't want any accidents to happen, now would we?

All characters will return to Mayfield after a day, upon which the regains they received from the event that they didn't already have will vanish.]

Reminder
If you're setting up a contact post for the event, please date it out of order so it does not clutter everyone's friends list.

To date out of order, when you are creating the entry, click the "edit" link next to the date. Change the year to sometime in the future, and the entry will remain at the top of your journal. Check the checkbox marked "Date Out of Order." That way, the entry will go up in your journal but will not appear on anyone's friends list. I have been seeing a lot of contact posts on the game friends list, and this will make it difficult for people to see the IC entries people are making.

Thank you!

Well! Ahem. I'd just like to thank everyone for their answers to the census- it seems like our little town is growing all the time, isn't it? So many new faces around. Seems like there's someone new moving in every month!

But we can't lose sight of that small-town charm that makes Mayfield the glorious little town it is. No matter how many new folks show up here, always remember to be good to your neighbors and not start any trouble. Or else! Haha, I'm just kidding.

Ha. Haha. Aha.

wanted: 1 (one) new assistant mod
Good evening, Mayfield! And how are you? We hope you're doing great, because we're drowning! In work. We still hate working! It is bad, and not fun, and nobody likes to do it. So we're looking for a new assistant mod to help us out!

This assistant mod role will be almost entirely administrative and organizational. We need someone who is organized and who can maintain lists promptly and right on schedule without being asked to do so. It can be tedious work! But it's stuff that needs to be done, and these are things that the mod team needs a lighter load on to be better able to handle the Big Mod aspects of the game, like apps, plot, player concerns and questions, and so on.

So! To clarify, we are looking for a permanent assistant mod. We've found that the mod team works best with four people and a couple of helpers; by applying to this role, you're applying to stay on as an assistant. We need someone who can open and close reserves, who can process drops, who can make lists for the Activity Check, who can generally keep things in order, etc. We especially want someone who doesn't have to be reminded to do these things. All other aspects of the game will remain Big Mod work.

"But!!!" you cry, "What's in it for me, aside from fame and glory and being able to lounge on the super-mod-exclusive Mayfield Beach with the lovely lady-mods and the cabana boy, BF?"

...Isn't that good enough for you? It's not? Shame. Really, though, we can't offer much except for our affection, because being a mod unfortunately doesn't pay. And neither does crime, but BF still loves to do both, so take an example from hi-... Uh, never mind.

Anyway! If you are truly interested in becoming a bona-fide Assistant Mod, just sign up on this post giving us your name, the characters you currently play, your timezone, and at least 200 words explaining why you'd make a good assistant mod/why you deserve this most hefty of honors. Failing that, feel free to explain why everyone else in the game would make a horrible assistant mod and we shouldn't pick them over you. This post is screened, so be as nasty and needlessly slandering to your fellow players as you feel you must!

That's it. Thank you for your time, and have a great rest-of-the-evening!

event: exit
Oh for gosh's sake, old man, just let me- hello? Is this thing on~? There we go, sheesh! Told ya you should've just let me try it, Pop.

Oh, but- hi, everybody! I met lots of you when you all popped by our diner, and ya seem like nice folks, so when we heard about the ruckus going on in your little town we thought the least we could do is give you guys a tip! We're closin' down the diner until this blows over, so I'm afraid you can't stay here, but it's okay!

Looks like they just opened up a new town here on our own little highway. Just head westbound- watch out for the bears! -and you'll find it sooner or later. What was the name of it again? Dead something. Deadfolks' Mulch, or something? I forget. But if any of ya are looking to get away from... whatever it is you folks are dealing with, I bet it's as safe a place as any.

You take care now, 'kay? Don't go gettin' yourselves killed~!

[Late tonight, everyone who agreed to work with Grady will get an urgent phone call.]

Fuck.

Get to the dairy. All of you. Now. Anyone else comes down there, they're dead. Kill them all, immediately, or the consequences will be extremely dire.

Don't make me go down there myself. You won't like it. Trust me on that one, if nothing else.

Highway: part 2

[Just outside of Mayfield is a dusty old two lane highway. It curves around the outskirts of the town, going, according to signs along the roadside, either east or west. The road stretches, long and straight, for as far as the eye can see in both directions.

As you drive east, you'll pass a small gas station attached to a diner, before it gives way to trees and the empty road. Driving west, you'll pass through farmland and cornfields.

As you drive along, however, you may notice that soon enough you happen to be going west instead of east or east instead of west. In fact, while it will feel as though you are driving straight ahead, the road seems to form a loop around the outskirts of Mayfield. Within a half hour, no matter which direction you started off from, you will find yourself approaching the Mayfield exit, with the town appearing off from the horizon.

Shortly before the direction changes, you may notice a sign posted on the side of the road, giving the names and distances to other towns off the highway. Of course, these signs are merely part of the illusion; the road only really goes back to Mayfield.

Occasionally, right past the road sign, the open road ahead will flicker, leaving behind a glimpse of something on the other side.

Some of you visited before when the highway first appeared on Wednesday. Some of you are also determined to go back.

You might want to be careful this time around, though. Because Grady doesn't want you out there.

And he's got back-up.]

[a woman's voice, strained with nervousness.] H...hello?

Hmm? Hey Mom, phone's ringing! ...Aw, fine, I'll get it. Who's there?

Is... Is this Billy? [a deep breath.] It's the head librarian at the... the Mayfield Library. N...now, it seems Billy has a... book overdue.

Huh? You gotta be joking, lady. Reading's for nerds, I don't go to the library! You must have the wrong house.

It says Billy... Smith. [it sounds like she's gritting her teeth.] Right here. [there's the sound of pages rustling.]

Well, you must have the wrong Billy Smith, then. If that's all, I'm gonna hang up now, okey doke?

Wait!

...Huh?

[suddenly the tone of her voice changes; it's not so tired any more. it sounds a lot... younger.] Look, I'm tired of this! Just- )

[ooc; Neither Billy nor the Librarian will be responding to any returned phone calls, but your characters are free to speculate on what they've just heard here.]

So. I'm sure we're all very excited about the highway. Exciting times, to be sure.

But here's the thing. You weren't brought to this town so you could run around poking around every nook and cranny that opens up, see? That ain't part of the plan, boyo. Which means, of course, that you little bastards will run around doing everything in yer power to go explorin'. Of course ya will.

I'll only say this once: don't go on the highway anymore.

We won't ask nicely again.

[At 5:00 AM, the Milkman leaves the Mayfield Dairy as he always does. It's a normal Monday morning, and when he returns a couple of hours later, there's not a sound coming from the Dairy, as usual.

It's only when the sun begins to rise in the sky, however, that a strange, faint, distant rumbling begins. As the day begins and the drones assume their daily errands and routines, they begin exchanging looks of puzzlement at the barely-audible sound, but shrug and go on with their days.

The sounds become intermittent, with long breaks punctuated by further strange sounds. If you're perceptive enough, you may be able to trace the source.

It seems to be coming from beneath the Mayfield Dairy.]

You really messed up, Mister Postman. After all, they say there's no place like home for the holidays!

And this is everyone's home now. So why would anybody want to leave?

I guess that's what happens when you're stinky and stupid and you don't know that Mayfield is perfect, and nobody's leaving ever.

So good try, dummy, but I guess I win! Oh, and everybody, for being so good, you can have an extra special present from me.

Bye bye!
