event end: the beginning of the end

[At the Church of Salvation, the doors have been blasted open as if by a grenade. The interior of the church is normal- normal, that is, save for the glitch pockets surrounding the pews, growing and widening with each passing second. As with every glitch pocket you've encountered thus far, there are whispers tugging at the edges of your mind... but here, strangely, they're rather quiet despite your close proximity to the holes. The whispers are muted, as if something is suppressing them- and it's not hard to figure out what that something is.

A man is kneeling in front of the central pulpit, head bowed, unmoving. You've never seen him in person before, but somehow, instinctively, you know who this man is- or was. As you approach, his body flickers, rippling with the same sort of chaotic nothingness as the glitch pockets. You know, without asking, that Jonathan Zemekis won't be here for long.

As you stand before him, he raises his head and looks at you. His eyes are weary, broken, and surprisingly human; his voice is hoarse and defeated.]

So.

It's you.

[After the chaos of the zombies, Bazett is looking worse for wear. Nevertheless, she drags herself to the Church door, standing just outside and waiting to hear what the others have to say first. Or, if the old man would notice her after everyone else was finished.]

Johnson.

[That name sends a disgusted shudder down her spine.]

You mean that Johnson. From January. What has she done? And how come you speak as if you are vulnerable to her power?

I see.

[In truth, she expected this encounter to be more violent. This was the man under whom all of Mayfield's atrocities had occurred. It was because of him that her body was now battered. It was because of him that she bore physical and emotional scars from things like surgeries.]

[But looking at him, the most she can feel is pity. He has been effectively neutralized as a thread--it is Jones that she must be concerned with. Looking at his frail form, she almost cannot believe that he is really Zemekis.]

Then before you fade, can I ask a question or two? I know why you have brought us here, but how? Are we even real? And how do we return home? What is the true nature of the drones? Most importantly, even if you answer nothing else, how would we stop Jones without erasing the entire town?

[She starts stepping into the Church. She almost wants to give him a pat on the back and soothe his coughing.]

So you pulled us in here. Into this illusion. In other words, it is like our minds are seeing an unending dream?

[So in the end, it circled back to her not being real after all. She was just a pale imitation.]

[And yet, that imitation had emotions. That imitation had achieved things the original could not imagine. Made realizations that the original never had the chance to make.]

[She was not Bazett Fraga McRemitz. Not completely, at least. But she did have an identity. Maybe that made her real]

I remember going home once. What was that?

[So that was it. She did not have a home to return to, because in that "home", Bazett had never left.]

And those who return without memories? I was told that there was another version of me here. One from the same universe as Lancer.
